Serafim S3 mobile game controller review: console-style gaming experience with decent ergonomics 

Responsive and well-built device with an Xbox controller layout, low-latency USB-C wired connection and 3.5mm headphone jack

Gaming controllers such as the Serafim S3 can give you a much more compelling mobile experience than just using the touchscreen on your phone.

They can quickly transform your phone into a handheld gaming console delivering a similar experience to the likes of the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch 2.

Serafim S3 in everyday use

Serafim S3 works seamlessly with both Android devices and recent iPhones that have the USB-C connection. The USB-C adapter on the controller offers a degree of flexibility when inserting your phone and removing it.

The S3 clips onto your phone and uses a stretch design that means it can support larger mobiles such as Redmagic’s latest excellent gaming handset, the 11S Pro. It weighs just 140g and feels robustly made.

Serafim S3 offers an experience similar to using an Xbox controller. One side of the S3 has a D-Pad, joystick and options button while the other side has the X, Y, A, B buttons, a joystick and some more options buttons. Both sides also have two sets of triggers on the top.

The device employs hall effect joysticks and triggers which will not be prone to stick drift and which enable smooth and accurate control. You’ll enjoy the benefits when playing games in which quick reactions or precise movements are important.

The unit comes with an extra set of interchangeable grips in the box so you can choose between a deep textured or smooth and shallow grip. It’s a comfortable controller to hold and use, even for sustained periods.

Because it’s a wired connection, you’ll not encounter any of the lag that can sometimes hinder Bluetooth controllers.

I love the passthrough charging feature which makes a big difference when you want to indulge in marathon gaming sessions. I also love the 3.5mm headphone port as wired audio always brings a superior and more immersive experience when gaming.

The firm has its own companion smartphone app that allows you to customise settings, take screenshots and record gameplay but you don’t need the app to use the controller.
