Valve Reveals Why Steam Machine Has No Exclusive Games

Valve wanted Steam Machine to offer a console-like experience, but the company decided not to launch the system with exclusive games that could attract more players.

While the main selling point of the platform is giving users access to the full Steam library from their living room, some people were disappointed that there were no new games released alongside the system.

Steam Machine Won’t Rely on Exclusive Titles

In an interview with Bloomberg, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais made it clear that exclusive games were never part of the company’s plans for the Steam Machine because Valve has a different goal for the platform.

“Restricting where people can play a game I don’t think is a great model, at least for us,” he added. “We’re much more interested in having the whole PC catalog as our ‘launch exclusive.’”

In the months before the Steam Machine launched, there were many rumors that Half-Life 3 could be released as an exclusive title for the platform and arrive on day one.

Those rumors turned out to be false, and there is still no official confirmation about whether a new game in the famous FPS series actually exists.

In other news, a new report estimates Steam Machine sales at up to 15,000 units per week, with Valve potentially reaching 750,000 units in one year.
