China develops more than half of the world’s humanoid robots: report
China has developed more than 400 humanoid robot models, accounting for more than half of the global total, according to a report citing the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
The ministry said Chinese-developed quadruped robots now account for nearly 70 percent of global sales. The figures were published by the state-run Global Times, which cited MIIT as saying China has leveraged its strengths in advanced manufacturing and the digital economy to accelerate the development of robotics and related technologies.
Eastern China’s Zhejiang Province emerged as one of the country’s leading robotics hubs during the first half of the year. According to Hangzhou Customs, the province exported more than one billion yuan (around USD 147 million) worth of robots, with intelligent bionic robots accounting for about 60 percent of China’s total exports in the category.
Officials attributed the growth to Zhejiang’s extensive robotics ecosystem, which spans research and development, component manufacturing, assembly, software development and international sales. Hangzhou alone is home to more than 700 companies across the robotics supply chain.
The report by Global Times also highlighted China’s continued expansion of digital infrastructure. As of the end of June, the country had built 5.102 million 5G base stations, while authorities are accelerating the commercial rollout of 5G-Advanced (5G-A) networks and conducting pilot projects for 10-gigabit fibre broadband in residential areas, factories and industrial parks.
