WhatsApp May Replace Two-Step Verification PIN with a Stronger Password

WhatsApp is working on a new security feature that could make user accounts more secure by replacing the current two-step verification PIN with a password. The feature is still under development and is not yet available for beta testers, but early findings suggest the company is exploring a major upgrade to its account protection system.

At present, WhatsApp’s two-step verification uses a six-digit numeric PIN. Users who enable this feature must enter the PIN when registering their phone number on a new device. While this extra security layer has been available for years, it has remained largely unchanged since its introduction.

According to the latest information from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp now plans to replace the numeric PIN with an account password. Unlike a PIN, a password can include both letters and numbers and can be much longer. This would give users many more possible combinations, making it significantly harder for attackers to guess or crack.

Interestingly, WhatsApp’s earlier plans were different. Previous reports suggested the company wanted to introduce a password as an additional security layer while keeping the existing PIN. However, the latest beta version indicates that WhatsApp is now considering replacing the PIN completely instead of adding another step.

The upcoming password feature is expected to allow users to create a password between six and 20 characters. It would require at least one letter and one number, providing stronger protection than a six-digit PIN.

The main advantage of a password is its complexity. A PIN only contains numbers, which limits the number of possible combinations. A password that mixes letters and numbers offers far more possibilities, making it much more difficult for someone to guess. Even if an attacker somehow obtains the SMS verification code, the password would provide an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access.

For users who already use two-step verification, WhatsApp is expected to offer a way to switch from the existing PIN to a password once the feature becomes available. Although the company has not shared details about the transition process, it will likely guide users through the update step by step.

The change will not make two-step verification mandatory. Users who choose not to enable the feature can continue using WhatsApp as they do today. The update will only change the type of security code used by people who decide to activate two-step verification.

Since the feature is still in the early stages of development, there is no official release date. WhatsApp has also not confirmed whether the password-based system will definitely launch. As with many features tested in beta versions, the final design could change before a public rollout, or the company could decide not to release it at all.

If introduced, the new password-based verification system would represent one of WhatsApp’s biggest security improvements in recent years, offering users stronger protection against unauthorized access while keeping the two-step verification process simple and optional.
