ChatGPT Study Mode Parental Controls: OpenAI’s Teen Safety

ChatGPT Study Mode Parental Controls are among the key updates OpenAI announced today, as part of a broader push to expand teen access to AI while strengthening safeguards and support.

The use of AI among teens in Singapore continues to be an area that’s top of mind for many parents, and today’s rollout includes ChatGPT Study Mode Parental Controls with parental controls, more interactive learning experiences, and more frequent break reminders to encourage healthy usage habits.

In Singapore, learning is among the top 3 use cases for ChatGPT.

What’s New Across Learning, Well-Being and Safety

Building on steps taken over the past year, including parental controls and age prediction, today’s update introduces new features across learning, well-being and safety:

  • Study Mode through Parental Controls: Parents with linked teen accounts can now turn on Study Mode directly through Parental Controls. Once enabled, it will be on by default whenever a teen starts a new chat. Study Mode is a feature within ChatGPT that helps students work through problems step by step, rather than simply feeding them an answer. OpenAI’s early research has shown promising gains in student performancewhen learners use this kind of pedagogically aligned support.
  • More support for learning: OpenAI is introducing more learning-focused starter prompts, while expanding interactive learning experiences across more maths and science topics.
  • Encouraging healthier use and strengthening safety: Teens who spend extended time in ChatGPT will receive more frequent break reminders. OpenAI is also expanding notifications for linked teen and parent accounts, including when a teen account is banned for content that violates its policies on violent threats or harm.
