8 Best Battle Royale Games Like Fortnite
Despite expanding into multiple experiences since its launch in 2017, Fortnite remains a staple in the battle royale genre. Battle royale modes continue to grow in popularity, especially with seasonal updates that keep the game fresh with new items, mechanics, map changes, and more.
There are numerous free-to-play games that belong to the battle royale category that all have something different to offer. However, if you’re a Fortnite fan, and you want a change of pace or a new way to play, there are other titles you can take for a spin, either solo or with friends that scratch that battle royale itch.

Super Animal Royale
Cozy Combat
For a battle royale where you play as adorable animals, look no further than Super Animal Royale. It supports lobbies of up to 64 players, with the gameplay taking place in an abandoned safari park. There are solo matches, or team up in a squad of up to four players. You can collect and customize animals, as well as the weapons you’ll use, which are categorized into guns, melee weapons, and throwables.
I would consider the best part about Super Animal Royale is that combat is approached as top-down 2D fights, something that games in the battle royale genre don’t typically deliver.

My Hero Ultra Rumble
Anime Battle Royale
One for the anime lovers, My Hero Ultra Rumble is inspired by the My Hero Academia series, allowing you to play battle royale matches as its characters in teams of three players. The characters are divided into five factions: Strike, Assault, Rapid, Technical, and Support. The strengths of each character differ depending on your unique quirk, and you can improve your character’s abilities by collecting items and defeating enemies.
New seasonal updates continue to add new characters and battle styles to master. If you like third-person battle royale games like Fortnite but with skills to master, My Hero Ultra Rumble combines chaos with strategy that results in interesting combat encounters.

Fall Guys
The Last Bean Standing
If you want to leave the guns behind, but still throw yourself into a vibrant world with competitive battle royale matches, Fall Guys is an enjoyable change of pace. You’ll navigate various obstacle courses with moving platforms, slippery surfaces, seesaws, and more. Players are eliminated every round, so you must make it to the final and be the last player standing or first player to complete an objective to take the crown.
The clumsy mechanics work well to elevate the experience, but despite supporting team-based modes, it’s every player for themselves. You can grab others and even push them off the map to play the villain on your way to the win.

Call of Duty: Warzone
A Classic Military Shooter
Since its launch in March 2020, Call of Duty: Warzone has seen hundreds of weapons, new maps, and an array of fresh content and mechanics, thanks to integration with yearly Call of Duty releases. Regular season and mid-season updates more often than not result in a meta change, so there’s always new guns to get accustomed to.
Warzone accommodates numerous playstyles, from standard battle royale modes with loadouts enabled taking place on large maps, to a more traditional experience with Black Ops Royale. In addition, there’s the ever-popular Resurgence modes on smaller maps that have respawns enabled, similar to that of Fortnite Reload.
4
Apex Legends
A Titan of Hero Shooters
Another established battle royale, Apex Legends is a fast-paced hero shooter with a unique roster of characters that only continues to grow. As you traverse the map, you will find different rarities of weapons, shields, attachments to equip to your guns, and more. I find the combat to be satisfying beyond gunplay, due to powerful abilities and thrilling finishers.
In comparison to Fortnite, a stand-out mechanic in Apex Legends is that there’s no fall damage. This means you can jump from high spots, slide off surfaces, and push the limits of mobility for greater movement and to truly make the map your playground.

Naraka: Bladepoint
Addicting Melee Combat

August 2021 |
Naraka: Bladepoint is a battle royale, but with devastating melee combat to deliver deadly combos and parries in a fast-paced environment that’s all about close-quarter fights. It’s all about timing and practicing techniques, which, in my opinion, means Naraka: Bladepoint can be challenging to pick up for beginners.
Each character has a skill and an ultimate ability that keeps combat interesting. There’s fluid mobility, delivered through grappling hooks, wall running, jumping, and climbing, for more thrilling combat opportunities.
The developers have also nailed the Eastern theme through the art style, from the bamboo forest to carefully designed buildings, all shrouded in a mysterious realm.
2
PUBG: Battlegrounds
Strategic Survival
For classic battle royale gameplay that raises the stakes, you can’t go wrong with PUBG: Battlegrounds. It puts your survival skills to the test with an arsenal of weapons, supplies, and tools used to take down any opponents unlucky enough to cross your path.
The game is more tactical and punishing compared to Fortnite, but it gets the simple, yet fundamental mechanics correct. As a battle royale, it does a fantastic job at building tension, especially in the final circles. However, those moments are what makes earning the match victory in PUBG: Battlegrounds even more rewarding, either playing solo or with friends.
1
Farlight 84
Turning Up the Adrenaline
One of the top games like Fortnite is Farlight 84, which is a fast-paced hero shooter battle royale with respawns enabled. Farlight 84 also has Buddies that can be caught in the wild, similar to the way in which Sprites work in Fortnite. Due to each hero bringing new skills, combining them with the abilities of Buddies adds a fresh layer to combat, whether that’s disguising terrain, stealing items, or providing mobility boosts.
If you want a movement shooter where you can wall run, slide from rooftop to rooftop, and that allows you to feel like a truly powerful hero as you battle it out for the match victory, Farlight 84 is a solid option.
