Cory Barlog confirms new Kratos game is also in development
Santa Monica Studio isn’t done with Kratos, the Ghost of Sparta, as God of War: Laufey will tie directly into the next installment of the planned God of War trilogy. During the God of War: Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, lead creative Cory Barlog kicked off the show by revealing that a new mainline game featuring Kratos is already in development, even as Laufey approaches its February 16, 2027 release.
During the panel (via garethjmb), it was revealed that the story told in Laufey will unravel what’s coming next for Kratos. The panel erupted with joy upon hearing about a third installment of the God of War Norse reboot, especially for long-time fans wondering if Kratos stepping away from the lead for just one game meant losing him from the series for good.
However, Barlog remained tight-lipped about the upcoming project featuring Kratos, as the panel was entirely dedicated to Laufey. Still, he emphasized how closely the two projects are interconnected, explaining that the lore and story being built and unraveled in Laufey will set up and expand the next God of War installment.
For reference, he used Jack Quaid’s strange blue cube character Phranque as an example or set-piece that has been a core element since the beginning of the reboot’s development and described it as a small puzzle piece for the grander world-building that will lead to “something so amazing.”
Quaid joked about his character when he first learned about the role, recalling, “I’m gonna be a cube.” Later, he was joined onstage by Cory Barlog alongside Kratos’ voice actor Christopher Judge, Deborah Ann Woll, Perlina Lau, and game director Ariel Lawrence.
A ‘complete’ God of War cycle
In a separate segment, Judge said that Kratos embracing Egyptian mythology would “be a completion of my circle,” given his history of playing Teal’c on Stargate. Coincidentally, the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet has already made a cameo as a supposed major antagonist in Laufey’s earlier gameplay reveal trailer.
The panel also cemented God of War: Laufey’s release date, confirming that it will launch on February 16, 2027 as a PlayStation exclusive, with wishlists already open. This means players can look forward to a run of back-to-back God of War projects, including God of War: Laufey, a trilogy remake in development, an Amazon Prime Video series currently on pause after Ryan Hurst’s injury, and, last but not least, the Kratos-centered sequel teased by Cory Barlog, which has no release date yet.
While Kratos won’t be playable in Laufey, he has already made several appearances in the game’s showcase and will supposedly continue to do so throughout the story as Faye journeys through the Everywhen afterlife.
