Mobile Puzzle Games Hit $4.9B in H1 2026: Match-3 & Merge Trends

Merge-Style Games Emerge as a Fast-Growing Secondary Engine

Meanwhile, merge games emerged as a powerful secondary growth engine and the fastest-growing among the big genres. Merge games made $1.3B in H1 2026, shooting up 74% year-over-year as downloads grew by 24%. AppMagic noted that monetization is the greatest strength of this segment, with player spending growing faster than downloads as publishers like Century Games and Moon Active double down on merge-2, as per Pocketgamer.biz.

Microfun’s Gossip Harbor has been the top performer since October 2024, surpassing $100M in net monthly earnings for the first time in March 2026 and bringing in more than half a billion overall during H1. Century Games’ Tasty Travels also climbed from seventh place to second, earning $127M net in the first six months of the year, largely fueled by heavy user acquisition.

Despite this booming financial success, breaking into the category is becoming increasingly difficult for new developers. AppMagic data reveals a success rate of just 0.8% for newly launched match-3 apps, meaning only one out of 120 new games launched in the first half of the year managed to reach $100,000 in monthly revenue even once.

As the report points out, matching today’s strict genre standards is tough even for industry giants and even harder for newcomers. Because of this high barrier to entry, industry analysts expect major publishers to keep pouring heavy investments into user acquisition for existing category leaders as they fight for market share through the remainder of 2026.
