Hyundai Motor Group Hires Samsung Electronics Vice President Junghyun Kwon as Head of Autonomous Driving Development Center at AVP Headquarters

Through this appointment, Hyundai Motor Group plans to accelerate the advancement and commercialization of autonomous driving technology and speed up the execution of its future mobility strategy.Born in 1980, Kwon earned both his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from Seoul National University.Until recently, Vice President Kwon led the development of intelligent robots at Samsung Electronics.Before that, he was responsible for autonomous driving software development and productization at NVIDIA.He is widely recognized as an expert with extensive experience in research, development and commercialization of core autonomous driving AI technologies, including perception software for autonomous vehicles, deep learning, machine learning and computer vision.Going forward, Kwon will oversee the entire process, from research and development of the group’s core autonomous driving technologies to software-hardware integration, productization and application in mass production.

Based on its strengths in AI, computer vision and automotive semiconductors, the group expects him to help strengthen its autonomous driving technology competitiveness, lead the advancement of next-generation autonomous driving platforms and build a mass-production system, thereby contributing to greater competitiveness in its future mobility business.Kwon’s appointment has also drawn attention to the exchange of key talent in future technology fields between Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Group.

This month, Samsung Electronics established an RX business promotion unit directly under its CEO and hired Vice President Lee Dong-geon, who had been in charge of robotics strategy at Hyundai Motor Group, as part of its push to strengthen its robotics business.

Industry observers say the movement of key talent between the two companies, as Hyundai Motor Group strengthens its autonomous driving AI capabilities and Samsung Electronics bolsters its robotics business competitiveness, reflects an active expansion of human networks aimed at enhancing organizational competitiveness.
