(2) Reason for Investment

Domestic market challenges:

  • Support opportunities for the creation of global unicorns:

For startups to grow into global unicorns, it is important that they engage with global markets  from an early stage. In this regard, there is a growing need to further expand opportunities for  startups to access appropriate support from accelerators and other organizations that  possess expertise in international expansion and extensive networks of leading global  investors.

  • Connecting Japan’s Startup Ecosystem with Global Networks:

Globally, leading venture studios and accelerators have fostered the creation of numerous  unicorn and decacorn companies by equipping entrepreneurs and early-stage startups with

educational programs and valuable professional networks, enabling accelerated growth and  successful expansion into international markets. Meanwhile, within Japan’s startup  ecosystem, there remains a growing need to further expand opportunities for entrepreneurs  and startups to access global expertise in entrepreneurship and business scaling, as well as  networks of global investors.

Expected impact of this investment:

  • Fostering the creation of global unicorns from Japan through support from a leading  global accelerator:

Through the partnership between Transpose and YC, JIC expects Japanese entrepreneurs  and startups to gain access to world-class expertise, global best practices, and valuable  connections with leading investors. In addition, through educational programs, webinars,  hackathons, and other initiatives, the partnership is expected to strengthen pathways for  promising entrepreneurs to engage with YC. These efforts aim to expand growth  opportunities for startups that aspire to compete in global markets from the earliest stages  of their development.

  • Strengthening Japan’s startup ecosystem through access to global networks: Beyond identifying and supporting promising entrepreneurs, this investment is expected to  expand opportunities for Japanese entrepreneurs, startups, and VCs to gain insights into  building globally competitive businesses and supporting startup growth. By facilitating deeper  engagement with international networks and best practices, JIC aims to contribute to the  continued development and strengthening of Japan’s startup ecosystem.
