When most people imagine an exoskeleton, they picture something closer to a suit of armour like in the sci-fi movie Elysium. Heavy frames, motors and mechanical joints have limited wearable robots from becoming practical outside specialist environments, but a new design could offer a much more subtle approach.
Developed by researchers at Hebei University of Technology in China, the soft exosuit uses artificial muscles made from dielectric elastomer materials. These rubber-like fibres contract when exposed to an electric field, mimicking the way human muscles work rather than relying on conventional motors, gearboxes or air pumps.
The team bundled thousands of these tiny artificial muscle fibres together to create a lightweight system that can be worn around the hips. The result is a flexible wearable device that looks more like a harness than a robotic suit, while still providing assistance during walking.
Researchers tested the exosuit on six healthy volunteers, comparing walking with the system switched on, switched off and without wearing it. When active, the suit reduced the energy needed for walking by an average of 13.9%, suggesting it could help reduce fatigue during movement.

The potential applications go well beyond helping people walk more comfortably. Lightweight exosuits could eventually support older adults, people recovering from injuries, workers performing physically demanding tasks, or anyone needing extra endurance without being restricted by a bulky machine.
There are still challenges before this technology becomes something you can buy and wear every day. The current prototype is limited by battery life, and the control system still needs to become smarter at adapting to different walking speeds and terrain.
However, the research points towards a future where wearable robots don’t make people look like they’re preparing for a battle with aliens. Instead, they could become lightweight pieces of clothing that make everyday movement easier.
