Samsung finally figured out how to make a crease-free foldable screen seven years too late

For seven years, across seven generations of devices, owners of foldable phones have been contending with the same glaring compromise: the inescapable display crease. You either got used to ignoring the physical trench down the middle of your screen or you skipped foldables entirely.
But the hardware landscape is transforming. There is a lot of talk about Apple entering the market with a foldable iPhone Ultra, and Samsung is directly answering the threat with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8. The firm claims to have completely re-engineered the flexible screen to be almost crease-free, far more robust, and considerably thinner.
Samsung has announced Flex Titanium, a new display structure that replaces the support layer of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) used in previous Galaxy Z Fold models with a titanium-based plate. Samsung says the material is lighter, stronger, and more suitable for ultra-thin foldables, as it can hold its shape while taking less space.
Thinner without compromise
The company’s announcement is in sync with hands-on impressions from Tom’s Guide’s Mark Spoonauer, who had a chance to get an early look at what Samsung says is the new display of the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The screen is significantly thinner but still retains the premium feel of a foldable, the outlet (sister publication of Android Central) reports.
The change is not simply swapping out one material for another. Traditionally, CFRP under the display is used to provide reinforcement for the flexible screen of foldable OLED panels. Titanium offers the same structural support but allows a thinner overall panel, helping manufacturers to squeeze precious millimeters from ever-thinner devices, per Samsung. The company also combined the new support layer with a new OLED process, which is designed to improve flexibility and durability, two areas that have defined the evolution of foldables since the original Galaxy Fold.
Samsung’s announcement comes amidst ongoing rumors surrounding Apple’s much-anticipated foldable iPhone, with Samsung Display expected to be a major supplier of foldable OLED panels.
Android Central’s Take
Personally, I’m all for anything that makes foldables thinner and tougher, because that’s what people actually notice after the novelty wears off. Titanium sounds impressive, but Samsung still has to prove this is more than just another flashy material name. If Flex Titanium means a phone that’s easier to carry, survives daily wear better, and doesn’t come with compromises, users win. Otherwise, I don’t think buyers are going to care what metal is hiding under the display.
