Humanoid and mobile robots are driving a shift in precision gearing design, according to a discussion at the Automate 2026 trade show in Chicago. Engineers are now tasked with balancing factors such as accurate positioning, rigidity, torque density, efficiency, and weight within increasingly compact joints.

In an interview from the event, Nidec Drive Technology outlined the technologies it is developing for advanced robotics and industrial automation. The company highlighted its FLEXWAVE strain-wave reducers, KINEX cycloidal gearboxes, and high-precision planetary systems.

The conversation focused on the engineering rationale behind the hardware rather than a simple list of specifications. Topics included the importance of zero backlash in robotic motion, how a compact gearbox can absorb high shock loads, and the circumstances under which integrating gearing directly into a robot joint is preferable to using a standalone unit.

Peter Sparopoulos and Scott Asher discussed the industry trend toward lighter, more integrated robotic actuators that combine gearing, motors, and sensors. They explained what robot manufacturers are requesting as systems transition from fixed industrial equipment toward battery-powered mobile and humanoid platforms.
