OpenAI Plans to Launch a Humanlike AI Speaker in 2027

OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its first hardware product, and according to recent reports, it will be a rechargeable AI-powered speaker. Unlike traditional smart speakers, this device will focus on natural conversations and personalized assistance. OpenAI speaker will act as a humanlike AI companion that users can carry from one room to another, making everyday tasks easier and more interactive.

One of the main features of the speaker is its portability. Since it will be rechargeable, users will not have to keep it plugged into a power outlet all the time. They can carry it around the house while doing different activities. For example, someone could use it in the kitchen to receive step-by-step cooking instructions and later move it to the living room for entertainment or casual conversations.

The device will provide a much more natural communication experience than existing smart speakers. Reports suggest that it will use a more advanced version of the AI model behind ChatGPT’s latest voice mode. This upgraded technology will allow the speaker to listen and respond at the same time, making conversations feel smoother and more realistic. It will also be able to understand changing situations during a conversation and adjust its responses accordingly.

Unlike many modern smart devices, the speaker will not include a display. Instead, OpenAI is reportedly focusing on creating a product that feels more lifelike through mechanical movements. These moving parts may help give the impression that the device is reacting naturally during conversations, making interactions feel more engaging. The goal is to create a companion rather than just another voice-controlled gadget.

The speaker will also include a camera and other sensors. These features would allow the device to better understand its surroundings and provide more personalized responses. For example, it could recognize the environment or detect what a user is doing to offer more relevant suggestions or assistance. At the same time, such features may raise questions about user privacy, making data protection an important consideration when the product is released.

OpenAI has invested heavily in developing its first hardware product. In 2025, the company acquired io, the startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, in a deal worth $6.5 billion. Ive is famous for designing several of Apple’s most successful products, and his experience will play an important role in shaping OpenAI’s new device.

The speaker will currently launch sometime in 2027. However, the release could face delays because of ongoing legal disputes between Apple and OpenAI. Apple has accused OpenAI and two former Apple employees of misusing confidential hardware information. The lawsuit also claims that OpenAI has hired hundreds of former Apple employees, including senior executives who previously worked on important Apple projects. OpenAI has not admitted to these allegations, and the legal process is still ongoing.

If the reported features become reality, OpenAI’s first device could introduce a new way for people to interact with artificial intelligence. By combining advanced voice technology, portability, and personalized assistance, the speaker aims to move beyond the traditional smart speaker and offer a more natural and helpful AI experience.
