What causes these periodic bursts?

I poured a tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol into a plate and placed an aluminium foil with an inch square hole cut into it. When I ignited the liquid at first it burns consistently and then a plume rose from the hole with a period for about two seconds. What causes these periodic plumes from a chemistry or fluid dynamics standpoint?
