While Apple has not commented on the reason for the increase, the yen has recently traded at its weakest level in 40 years. A weaker yen lowers the dollar value of Apple’s sales in Japan, which likely prompted the adjustment to bring local pricing more closely in line with pricing in other markets.
The move follows a broader round of Apple price increases last month affecting Macs and iPads, attributed to rising component costs. iPhone pricing was left unchanged in that round, making this the first iPhone-specific adjustment.
Because the increase in Japan appears tied to currency movements rather than input costs, it is unlikely to be mirrored in other regions unless Apple signals otherwise. Apple’s fiscal Q3 earnings call on July 30 may offer more details on pricing plans going forward.
