China expands its space network with new Tianlian relay satellite launch
China successfully launched a new relay satellite into orbit on Thursday, further strengthening its rapidly expanding space infrastructure and supporting future missions involving its Tiangong space station.
The Tianlian II-06 satellite lifted off aboard a Long March 3B carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern Sichuan province, according to state-run China Daily. The launch was carried out by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., the country’s leading space contractor, News.Az reports, citing Anadolu Agency.
Designed to enhance China’s space communication network, the Tianlian II-06 satellite will provide telemetry, tracking and data relay services for crewed spacecraft, remote-sensing satellites and the Tiangong space station. The satellite is expected to improve communication efficiency and mission support for China’s growing number of space operations.
The successful mission marks China’s 52nd space launch of 2026, underscoring the country’s accelerating pace in space exploration and satellite deployment. It is also the sixth satellite in the Tianlian II series, China’s second-generation data relay satellite system, which plays a key role in maintaining continuous communication with spacecraft operating in orbit.
As Beijing continues expanding its orbital capabilities, the latest launch highlights China’s long-term strategy of building a more advanced and reliable space communications network to support future scientific, commercial and crewed missions.
