WhatsApp Introduces Channel Storage Cleanup Tool for Android Beta Users

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that makes it easier for Android users to manage storage used by channels. The new Channel Storage Cleanup tool gives users more control over the media files downloaded from channels on WhatsApp, helping them free up space without deleting important content.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently available to some users running WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.30.4. It is being released gradually, so not all beta testers will receive it immediately.

WhatsApp Introduces Channel Storage Cleanup Tool for Android Beta Users

Previously, users could manage channel storage only through WhatsApp’s settings. However, the process required scrolling through all media files and selecting each one manually before deleting it. The new tool simplifies this process by allowing users to filter files based on their type, making storage management much faster and more convenient.

One of the biggest advantages of the new feature is that users can organize media into categories such as photos, videos, stickers, and voice notes. This allows them to remove only the files they no longer need instead of deleting everything from a channel.

WhatsApp has also introduced two different ways to access the cleanup tool. The first option is available from the Channel Info screen. Users can open a channel, review the media stored from that channel, filter files by category, and delete selected content. This provides better control over the storage used by individual channels.

The second option is available directly from the Updates tab. Users can tap and hold one or more channels, open the menu, and choose the “Clear media files” option. This allows media from multiple channels to be deleted at once, making it especially useful for people who follow many active channels that regularly share photos and videos.

Another useful feature is the protection of starred updates. If users have marked certain channel updates as important, WhatsApp will keep those files even when other media is deleted. This helps users clean up storage without worrying about losing content they want to save.

The new feature addresses a common issue where media shared through channels quietly accumulates over time. Since channels often post images, videos, and other files, they can consume a significant amount of storage without users realizing it. The new cleanup tool gives users a simple way to recover storage space before their device starts running low.

For now, the feature is only available to selected Android beta testers through the Google Play Store. WhatsApp says the rollout is gradual, and more beta users are expected to receive it over the coming weeks. The company has not yet confirmed when the Channel Storage Cleanup tool will become available in the stable version of the app.
