Want to try a surgical robot? Portneuf Medical Center is letting the public do just that | Local
POCATELLO — Portneuf Medical Center has invited the community to get a hands-on look at robotic surgery during a Meet the Robot event featuring its new da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system.
The event will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, in the Portneuf Medical Center conference room, according to a news release from PMC. The conference room can be accessed through the main entrance. The event is free to the public.
Attendees will have the opportunity to observe the da Vinci 5 robot through demonstrations and a live presentation by Dr. Jorge De Amorim Filho and Dr. Drew McRoberts, two Portneuf general surgeons. They will explain how robot-assisted surgery has improved precision, recovery time and outcomes.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to try the system themselves by having it perform simple tasks such as unwrapping candy, giving them an understanding of how surgeons use advanced technology to perform complex procedures.
PMC has been using da Vinci technology since 2011. It has several da Vinci robots, and the da Vinci 5 is the newest. These robots are used in a variety of surgical specialties including general, gynecological, thoracic, urological, bariatric and vascular surgery.
The expansion of the robotic surgery program reflects PMC’s commitment to quality care. PMC is recognized by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Robotic Surgery Center of Excellence.
SRC is a third-party organization that recognizes programs based on standards for surgical quality, patient outcomes and clinical practices.
PMC also holds accreditations as Centers of Excellence for hernia surgery, minimally invasive surgery and breast surgery.
