Streamer claims Microsoft “deleted” his account because it was hacked

Microsoft is facing fresh criticism over its handling of user accounts after another customer claimed the company permanently deleted their Microsoft account.

The report comes shortly after Microsoft faced backlash over another high-profile account recovery case, where an Xbox player successfully won a lawsuit against the company after claiming they had been locked out of their account.

Now, another Microsoft user has come forward with claims that their account has been permanently deleted, costing them thousands in digital purchases as well as years of personal files, including photos of their son as a baby.

Streamer says Microsoft permanently deleted hacked account

Streamer Joshua Khane shared the situation on X, claiming Microsoft deleted both his account and associated OneDrive storage even after confirming he was the account’s owner and that it had been compromised.

In the post, he wrote: “Microsoft deleted my account and OneDrive!!?? After acknowledging that I’m the owner of the account and that it was compromised? 25 f****** years of data, thousands of euros spent on games?? My son’s baby pictures? gone.”

He continued: “All because Microsoft couldn’t bring back a compromised account?? One of the biggest companies ever couldn’t do that, so they just deleted that s*** like it was nothing?? F****** shame on you!!”

Khane also attached what appears to be an email from Microsoft explaining its decision. According to the email, the company said that “to prevent further misuse, we have permanently suspended the account. The action is irreversible and ensures that your data remains protected.”

The email also stated: “If you used this account for Minecraft, we regret to inform you that the game cannot be recovered. A new purchase will be required on a newly created account.” It added: “Additionally, if you had files stored in OneDrive, these files are no longer accessible.”

The post quickly drew attention from other users, with many encouraging Khane to pursue legal action or sue Microsoft over the incident. However, responding to those suggestions, Khane said he was “tired,” but admitted he was “close” to taking legal action.

At the time of writing, Microsoft has not publicly commented on Khane’s claims or addressed the incident. The circumstances surrounding the reported account suspension also remain unverified beyond the user’s statements and the email shared on social media.
