I tested the Sonim XP Pro Thermal for a week — and this ultra-rugged phone doesn’t feel like a brick in my pocket
Rugged phones are built like tanks for a reason. They can absorb damage that would break other phones and expose how fragile they are. But that extreme durability usually comes with a frustrating trade-off: a bulky chassis that makes them feel like a literal brick in my pocket.
Examples of this include the Blackview Xplore 2 with a built-in projector, as well as the Blackview BL9000 Pro that packs a FLIR camera. However, the Sonim XP Pro Thermal completely ditches the stereotype surrounding rugged phones because it’s the thinnest one I’ve tested with an integrated night vision camera. It delivers the military-grade toughness you expect from a tank, but without the heft — making it incredibly pocketable.
After spending a week testing it out, I’m convinced that more phones should offer thermal night vision cameras.
A slim design that makes it pocketable
I’ve tested a number of thermal cameras, and they largely boil down to three categories: add-on accessories that connect to a phone, dedicated handheld models, and ones that are natively integrated into a phone. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.
The Sonim XP Pro Thermal fits into the final category. What makes it different is how it packs a FLIR Lepton 3.5 radiometric thermal sensor without making the design bulky.
Most thermal-capable smartphones are obnoxiously thick, but Sonim manages to integrate this sensor onto the back of the phone alongside a 50MP main camera, which is housed in a camera bar that stretches from one end to the other. It doesn’t just look tough; it carries the highest durability ratings you can get on a smartphone.
In fact, it features IP68 and IP69K certifications. This means it’s completely dust-proof, can survive being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes, and can even withstand high-pressure, high-temperature power washers. And if that’s not enough, it’s built to MIL-STD-810H military standards, allowing it to survive drops from up to 6 feet onto hard surfaces.
The display is shielded by Gorilla Glass Victus II, ensuring that while it easily slips into your pocket, it can survive harsh conditions, extreme temperatures, and accidental tumbles without missing a beat. When I consider that it packs a thermal camera into a frame that’s just 0.47 inches thick, it’s truly remarkable how pocketable this phone actually is.
Everyday utility I can take with me

I can’t stress enough the convenience of having an integrated thermal camera on a phone versus having to attach a separate accessory. It’s always there with me no matter what, and that alone is incredibly valuable.
What makes the integrated FLIR Lepton 3.5 sensor so impressive isn’t just how small it is, but how practical it is for everyday tasks. By using FLIR’s MSX technology, the phone overlays physical details from the 50MP main camera directly onto the thermal heat map, turning blurry temperature blobs into razor-sharp outlines. I’ve found it works best under sunny, daytime conditions because at night, those physical details can look faint and indistinct.
In practice, this turns the phone into the ultimate diagnostic tool. For homeowners like me, it lets you instantly track down hidden insulation gaps or drafty air leaks around windows and baseboards. And since I spend a lot of time outdoors at night shooting astrophotography, it’s great for safety — giving me a quick way to scan for local wildlife or critters in the pitch black while I’m waiting for a long-exposure capture session to finish.
Modern specs with a mid-range price

Beyond its specialized thermal capabilities to see through the darkness, the Sonim XP Pro Thermal holds its own as a modern Android device. Under the hood, it runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. By no means does it break benchmark records, but the hardware at least isn’t sorely outdated like the Trump Phone T1.
Around the front, you get a sizable 6.58-inch FHD+ display protected by Gorilla Glass Victus II, which ensures the screen doesn’t scuff when sharing pocket space with tools or keys. There’s a 5,000 mAh battery that easily carries me through a full day of work, leaving plenty of gas in the tank when I’m heading home on the subway. And lastly, it supports both fast wired and Qi wireless charging, which are great inclusions for a rugged phone.
You can find the Sonim XP Pro Thermal for around $650, which is a reasonable compromise. Not many mid-range phones offer this level of rugged protection, nor do they come with a thermal camera. Testing this device ultimately leaves me wishing that more mainstream smartphones would offer built-in thermal cameras — it’s a genuinely practical utility that deserves a spot in everyone’s pocket, especially when in reality, it doesn’t bulk up the size.
