Apple Reportedly Developing New Operating System for Smart Home Hub

Apple is reportedly working on a new operating system designed specifically for its long-rumored smart home hub. The software is expected to combine features from Apple’s existing platforms, including iOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new operating system could offer a familiar Apple-style interface with a grid of apps, widgets, and icons. It may also include customizable clock faces, giving users more options to personalize the display.

The software is being developed for a new Apple home hub that could combine a HomePod-style speaker with a 7-inch touchscreen. The device is expected to serve as a central control point for smart home features and other everyday tasks.

Siri is likely to play an important role in the new platform. Users could interact with the hub through voice commands to control smart home devices, check information, or access different features.

One of the more interesting features could be facial recognition. The hub may identify the person looking at the screen and display information based on their profile. The interface could also respond to the user’s distance from the device. For example, interface elements may automatically become larger when someone moves closer and smaller when they move away.

The new operating system could be called homeOS. Apple has not confirmed the name, but trademark activity involving a shell company has reportedly fueled speculation about the branding.

The smart home hub could support several Apple services and applications. Reported features include FaceTime video calls, home security monitoring, HomeKit accessory controls, photo galleries, calendar access, and music playback.
