BRIN urges future-oriented technology for mining downstream industry
Speaking at the fifth edition of the BRIN Goes To Industry (BGTI 5) forum, themed “Downstreaming Research and Innovation in the Mining Sector”, here on Tuesday, Satria reminded industry players to begin projecting future technological developments so that large-scale investments do not become futile due to the adoption of technologies that quickly become obsolete.
“We must not carry out industrialization and investment based on short-term technologies. Building a factory or industrial facility takes two to three years, and by the time it is completed, the technology may already be obsolete because new technologies have emerged,” he said.
Satria explained that the pace of global technological advancement is accelerating at an extraordinary rate. Therefore, the design of research projects and downstream processing facilities should not be based solely on current aspirations and needs but should also incorporate a forward-looking perspective.
He encouraged the mining industry ecosystem to conduct technology forecasting well into the future, at least to anticipate industry developments through 2035 and 2040.
“We need to use AI, experts, and the ability to analyze global trends so that we can understand what technologies are likely to be used in the future,” he remarked.
To build such a forward-looking ecosystem, Satria said BRIN continues to strengthen its strategic role in helping industries conduct technology forecasting.
The approach is expected to identify which technologies and instruments will remain relevant to the mining and energy sectors over the coming decades.
Through close collaboration between research institutions and mining companies, the BRIN head expressed hope that Indonesia’s mineral downstreaming efforts would become more effective, enhance the country’s global competitiveness, and keep pace with rapid technological innovations in advanced economies.
Previously, Satria said BRIN was preparing a future technology forecast to anticipate threats and increase the competitiveness of domestic research.
According to him, the projection will serve as a reference for shaping the country’s future industrialization strategy.
