Cardano has completed the much-anticipated Van Rossem hard fork, ushering the blockchain to protocol version 11 without centralized interference. This marks the first time the network has executed a major upgrade without Input Output, and the network will now focus on Ouroboros Leios to boost transaction times.

Cardano Devs Target Massive Network Scalability

Van Rossem will usher in a new era of lower cost and scalability for the blockchain after approval by the entire community, oversight, and node operators.

The upgrade has already sparked positive upticks in the ecosystem with devs pitching upscales ahead of a possible decentralized finance (DeFi) surge. Modeled after Max van Rossem, a Cardano contributor who passed on last year, it was approved by the entire governance structure.

The van Rossem hard fork has been successfully enacted on Cardano Mainnet!  We would like to take a moment to recognise the work of the Hard Forking Working Group to get us to this moment. Coordinating ecosystem partners, SPOs, DApps, developers and exchanges across multiple networks to ensure a safe Mainnet event.”

Stake pool operators that run servers backed the upgrade with 52.7% of the vote, above the required 51% mark. 77.6% of delegated representatives voted for the proposal in addition to approval by the Constitutional Committee, a board that ensures it’s in line with the roadmap.

Van Rossem’s main aim is to lower Plutus execution costs so developers can run faster apps for less. For security, every stake pool requires cryptographic keys to protect the network against evolving digital-asset hacks

Going forward, the stage is now set for Ouroboros Leios, a stage in the roadmap that will see transaction speed up to 65 times current throughput and exceed 1000 transactions per second.

Blockchain developers lauded Cardano’s promising future, highlighting the ability to attract top-tier developers and programs despite a struggling season. This is already reflected in the token’s price surge after buying sentiments flipped month-long liquidations.

ADA spiked 8% to trade at $0.1752 today and is into double-digit gains, signaling fresh buys around the upgrade. However, the token was among the most affected by the bear market and is down over 95% from its all-time high.

Van Rossem underscores the network’s decentralized effort as it plans to transfer control of key infrastructure in August. Cardano’s Haskell node, Plutus platform, Daedalus wallet, and Hydra scaling tool will be run by specialist firms.
