Delco still working to get systems fully back and running after June cyberattack
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware County officials have confirmed they were the victims of a cyberattack late last month. Weeks later, they are still working to get their systems back up and running at 100%.
When hackers attacked Delaware County government systems on June 26, its IT team jumped into action and shut down systems to prevent hackers from gaining total control of its networks.
“A lot of our phone systems were down, internet access, internal servers, financial software,” said Delaware County Communications Director Mike Connolly.
He said the county faces hundreds of thousands of unauthorized cyber intrusion attempts each year. This time, cybercriminals gained limited access to their systems.
“We know that the business model of these kinds of groups is to attack as many places as possible, and government entities at every level are one of their key targets.”
The county is bringing its system back online in stages, while beefing up its security.
“As new vulnerabilities are discovered and then solved, that’s an ongoing process. Our team does a really excellent job of constantly updating our protections, and that will never stop,” Connolly said.
All of the systems are expected to be back up and running within the next few days.
Connolly said they are still investigating the attack.
