Florida restaurant is giving away free “python pizza” if you catch the snake
There is a restaurant in Florida that will accept snakes as currency and give you a free pizza if you bring one in during the Florida Python Challenge.
Back on July 10, the Florida Python Challenge kicked off, and it is exactly what it sounds like. The annual competition challenges participants to catch Burmese pythons from different locations across the Sunshine State.
It takes place over 10 days, with the winner receiving $10,000. Last year, Taylor Stanberry became the first female winner, as she removed 60 pythons from the competition areas.
However, it’s not just the $10,000 top prize that’s up for grabs. If you’re hungry and want to eat what you’ve caught, then a local pizza restaurant is happy to abide – and they’ll take the pythons as payment too.
Wildman’s Pizza, Pasta and Python gives away free python pizza
That’s right, a restaurant in Everglades City called Wildman’s Pizza, Pasta and Python will happily take the pythons as payment, giving hunters free pizza for their troubles.
“I’m the first place in the world to accept python as currency. So you can trade in a python for a pizza. We do python toppings, python pizza, iguana, you know, whatever,” Dustin Crum, owner of Wildman’s Pizza, Pasta and Python told NBC South Florida.
Crum admitted that he can’t sell the python-topped pizza due to health regulations, but will happily give it away for free. “Yeah, I can’t sell that stuff, I just gotta give it away for free,” he added.
On top of that, the restaurant owner told NBC South Florida that nothing goes to waste. “The fat I use to make the snake oils for the skin, creams, soap. The bones we make jewelry, everything gets used,” he added.
As noted, there is a $10,000 top prize, but there are also $15,000 in prize spread across different categories.
Around 1000 people enter the annual competition, which will end on July 19. Pretty much anyone can enter, as long as you pass an online test with a score of at least 85%.
