Huntsville man arrested after identity theft and fraud investigation
A Huntsville man has been arrested following a financial crimes investigation involving allegations of identity theft, fraud and stolen funds.
According to Huntsville police, Devonte Jacquez Lanier, 27, of Huntsville, was taken to the Madison County Jail on Monday, July 13, on multiple charges, including identity theft, theft by deception, forgery and theft of property from a banking institution.
HPD said its Financial Crimes Unit began investigating reports of identity theft and fraud involving multiple victims’ accounts in October 2025.
According to booking records, Lanier faces the following charges:

Theft by deception in the second degree

Forgery and counterfeiting in the third degree

Theft by deception involving wire fraud

Theft of property in the first degree from a banking institution

Violation of probation/revocation (felony)
The total bond amount listed for the charges is $74,000.
During the investigation, investigators identified Lanier as a person of interest. Police said evidence showed fraudulent checks were deposited into victims’ accounts and that money was quickly withdrawn or transferred after the deposits were made.
