A new Salesforce study finds Indian workers lead the world in workplace AI adoption, even as the country also reports the highest share of unsuccessful AI pilots.

Salesforce has released the India findings from its Agentic Workplace Study, a double-blind survey of desk workers, showing that Indian workers are among the most active users of AI at work globally, even as the country also reports the highest rate of failed AI pilots among all markets surveyed.

India leads in AI adoption

According to the study, workers in India are 45 percent more likely than the global average to say AI is part of their core workflow, the highest share recorded across all surveyed markets. Salesforce says this signals AI has moved from experimentation into everyday use for a large share of India’s workforce.

But also leads in failed pilots

At the same time, India reports the highest incidence of unsuccessful AI pilots among the markets studied. 38 percent of Indian workers said their organisation experienced an unsuccessful AI pilot in the past year, compared to a global average of 28 percent.

Why the pilots are failing

The study points to a lack of business context as the leading reason AI pilots fall short in India. Among workers whose AI tools or pilots didn’t work out, 34 percent cited results lacking business context, compared to a global average of 22 percent.

Other commonly cited reasons include limited ability to personalise AI to their specific role or tasks (31 percent), generic outputs (31 percent), insufficient training (29 percent), and having too many different AI tools to manage (28 percent).

Skepticism remains high despite adoption

Even with high usage, trust in AI hasn’t fully caught up. 49 percent of Indian workers consider themselves AI skeptics, compared to 37 percent globally. Salesforce suggests this reflects a pattern where greater exposure to AI is also raising expectations around relevance, trust, and usability, rather than reducing skepticism.

What Salesforce says this means for employers

According to Salesforce, the data points to a clear next step for organisations in India. Rather than launching more pilots, the priority should shift to building better AI experiences, specifically secure, trusted, enterprise-ready AI agents connected to relevant business data, personalised for specific roles, and backed by proper employee training.

What Salesforce said

Deepu Chacko, VP, Solution Engineering, said: “India’s AI story is now about execution. The workforce is experiencing AI in the flow of work, and that experience is creating a more mature expectation from technology, AI that understands their business, supports their role, and helps them make decisions with confidence. Leaders must now focus on operationalizing AI, connecting data, redesigning workflows, building trust, and equipping people to work alongside agents. If this is done well, AI will not just lift productivity. It will define how India competes, innovates, and grows.”

Salesforce conducted the survey in partnership with YouGov, polling more than 1,500 desk workers, defined as workers whose day-to-day roles are primarily mental rather than manual or task-based labour, with at least minimal familiarity with AI. Respondents were surveyed across Australia, India (120 respondents), Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, Mexico, the United States, and Canada, between December 2025 and January 2026. Salesforce says the sample is representative across job roles, industries, and business size.
