Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man Games Were A Big Inspiration For Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Says Director

Destin Daniel Cretton, the director behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has revealed that he took a lot of inspiration for the new film from Insomniac Games‘ critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man video game franchise.

Speaking with Polygon, Cretton admitted he’s not actually a big gamer but revealed that a lot of the stunt department have experience with the Spider-Man titles, and were quick to offer some feedback.

I am not a gamer, but I’ve played the game, but I surrounded myself with people who were obsessive gamers. So a lot of the people in our stunt department loved playing those video games. So they would do screen grabs of their play and bring it in and say like, ‘Can we pull this move off?’ So that was a great inspiration for things.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth standalone movie in the series to feature Tom Holland as Peter Parker, and picks up following the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Peter’s loved ones having forgotten his existence along with the rest of the world. As such, Peter focuses on his Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man antics, but now comes up against a series of brand new threats including Scorpion and Tombstone.

Insomniac Games launched its Spider-Man series back in 2018 for the PS4 and followed it up with Spider-Man: Miles Morales in November 2020, which served as a launch game for the PS5. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrived in October 2023, and is to date the latest entry in Insomniac’s web-slinging series of video games. However, given their success, we’ve probably not see the last of Spider-Man on PlayStation.
