LifeSaver replacing helicopter fleet with new technology to better serve Alabama

SYLACAUGA, Ala. (WBRC) – New emergency helicopters are now in the air to help keep you safe. Air Methods is modernizing their LifeSaver Fleet with new technology and better patient access here in Alabama.

“This aircraft is very similar to the one we had. So, it’s a little faster, it’s a little better on fuel economy,” said Lead Pilot Kermit Baumgartner.

That’s only a couple of reasons Air Methods decided to upgrade their helicopters to newer ones that are more advanced. Baumgartner says the high standard of service and care remains the same with a little more options.

“Its got a more advanced autopilot system in it which allows the pilot to spend more time paying attention to more safety focus situations,” said Baumgartner.

The upgraded helicopter was introduced into the fleet in March and has slowly replaced the older model. The wider doors make it easier to get patients in and out. Flight Paramedic Jacob Slick says the extra room was needed.

“To me it’s a lot more user friendly for us, we have more room that we can get to stuff a lot easier than it being a little cumbersome. What has changed for this aircraft is where our equipment sits. We do have a little bit more room. In the old airframe we had the monitor down here and the vent up here,” said Slick.

With upgraded systems and more capabilities than before, flight nurse Tyler Smith says they’re better equipped to respond to patients in a timely manner.

“From day one they always use top of the line equipment. Their ventilators are the best, their airway equipment is the best, and now the aircraft that they’re supplying is one of the top-of-the-line EMS aircraft in the nation,” said Smith.

Flight crew members in Sylacauga say the new helicopter may look the same as the old, but it’s those subtle changes that’s making their job a lot easier.
