Minecraft YouTubers hit out at Technoblade larper for “impersonating our dead friend”

Minecraft YouTubers have criticized Technolarp, a creator who imitates the late Technoblade, as backlash against the growing “Larptuber” trend intensifies.

Technolarp has built his channel around a persona inspired by Technoblade, using a similar voice, humor, Minecraft skin, and video style. His channel has promoted uploads with the caption “He’s back in spirit” and streamed from the LarpSMP, a Minecraft server populated by players portraying recognizable creators.

Members of the LarpSMP say the project is intended to revive the atmosphere of older Minecraft streams and the Dream SMP, rather than replace the original creators. However, Technolarp has faced heavier scrutiny because Technoblade died from cancer in 2022.

Technoblade’s father recently confirmed that Technolarp had contacted him several times for his opinion. Technodad said he had avoided responding because he did not know how to handle the situation, describing his eventual answer as “inconclusive.”

Tubbo says Larptuber trend “just feels off”

Tubbo addressed the wider trend on X, writing: “Is it safe to say I’m really not sure I’m a fan of this whole larp account trend thing? It just feels off.”

Streamer Sneegsnag responded by making the criticism more direct, asking: “You’re not a fan of a dude impersonating our dead friend?” Tubbo agreed.

Minecraft event organizer and YouTuber Noah, also known as Pikaclicks, similarly criticized Technolarp for “forming your entire persona around impersonating someone who died of cancer.” He also argued that donating half of the revenue would not resolve his concerns surrounding the channel.

In a follow-up, Noah said Technoblade’s legacy was not Technolarp’s to continue and accused the creator of using an identity belonging to someone who could no longer defend it.

Hypixel co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme also weighed in, saying he did not support the channel and arguing that Technodad had been placed in an impossible position.

“If Technodad asks to delete the channel, he then becomes the villain to the larper fans,” Simon wrote. “This is a lose-lose situation for Technodad.”

Technolarp has denied trying to replace Technoblade, instead calling himself an intentional knockoff created to entertain people.

However, the responses from Tubbo, Sneegsnag, Noah, and Simon show that some figures within the Minecraft community view the impersonation differently from the other accounts participating in the wider Larptuber trend.
