Mon General confirms systems hit by phishing attack; says patient information may have been leaked – WAJR
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Monongalia County General Hospital Company has confirmed that out its computer systems were recently hit with a phishing attack that may have leaked some of its patients’ data.
Officials with Mon General announced the cyberattack as part of a press release on Friday, with the original phising emails discovered back in May. The system was hit through “small number of email users that were the subject of a phishing attack.” The company began an investigation into the incident with assistance from a “respected forensic security provider” and worked to terminate any unauthorized access to its email systems.
The investigation concluded in June and determined that an unauthorized party gained access to certain Mon General email inboxes. The relase also noted that access was terminated on the same day and no other systems were impacted.
In light of the attack, Mon General is warning that some patient data may have been leaked to the perpetrator, including first and last names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security Numbers, health information and health insurance information.
Anyone who was potentially impacted will receive a notification letter in the mail along with instructions to sign up for two years of credit monitoring.
