Nanovel Raises €2.5M EIC Grant for AI-Powered Citrus Harvesting Robots | 2026 – News and Statistics

An Israeli startup specializing in precision agriculture, Nanovel, which creates autonomous robots for harvesting citrus orchards, has received a EUR2.5 million grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator program.

The company is also qualified for as much as EUR4.3 million in equity funding from the EIC, designed to act as a cornerstone investment for a planned financing round of roughly EUR8 million. Nanovel indicated that this recognition mirrors the EIC’s evaluation of its technology, market viability, and operational strengths.

Established in 2018 by Isaac Mazor, who previously founded and led Jordan Valley Semiconductors, Nanovel is building a system that merges artificial intelligence, computer vision, and proprietary robotics to mechanize fruit picking for specialty crops.

This new funding will aid in creating a market-ready autonomous robot for picking oranges and lemons, with a planned commercial debut in 2028. The firm projects the worldwide market opportunity for just these fruits at approximately $1 billion each year.

The sector’s toughest robotics challenge

Firms in agricultural robotics have achieved notable advancements in fields like driverless tractors, spraying, and weeding. Yet, harvesting fresh fruit continues to be one of the industry’s most demanding technical hurdles. In contrast to field crops gathered by large equipment, citrus fruits need to be individually spotted, reached, and plucked without inflicting harm. The complexity escalates when fruit is hidden by thick leaves and irregular branch patterns.

Nanovel asserts it has devised a remedy for this issue. Its system employs computer vision and deep-learning AI to locate fruit concealed within tree canopies, then guides a patented Grip & Trim robotic tool to softly hold each fruit and cut the stem without bruising or harming the produce. Several robotic arms work concurrently to boost harvesting speed.

If it succeeds, this innovation could tackle a major obstacle to automation in specialty crops: the requirement to mimic the skill and judgment of human pickers in challenging field environments.

Labor shortages fueling demand

The business opportunity is propelled by workforce difficulties confronting fruit growers globally. According to Nanovel, seasonal picking labor accounts for about 50% of fresh-fruit production expenses, and numerous growers find it hard to hire enough workers during peak harvest times.

Isaac Mazor, Nanovel’s founder and CEO, stated that the company’s goal is to secure worldwide availability for consumers and financial sustainability for fresh-fruit growers by automating the most vital and labor-heavy part of the production chain.

To move toward commercialization, the firm is completing its multi-arm harvesting platform and broadening its activities in Europe, where it intends to carry out extensive field tests with growers in Spain and Italy.

Spain may serve as a testing ground

The upcoming development stage will be observed closely by the broader robotics community. Nanovel has already performed validation work in California alongside the Citrus Research Board and is conducting trials in orchards across Israel, Europe, and the United States. However, the upcoming European experiments could be especially important. Spain ranks among the world’s leading citrus producers and provides a practical test of whether autonomous harvesting can function dependably and cost-effectively on a commercial level.

If the robots can reliably find and pick fruit concealed within dense canopies while preserving fruit quality and speed, it would signify a major achievement not only for citrus farming but for agricultural robotics in general.

Although Nanovel’s current emphasis is on citrus, the company’s aspirations reach further. Its development plan includes adjusting the technology for other fruits such as mangoes, peaches, and nectarines.
