Robotics company 1X has unveiled a breakthrough hand for its NEO humanoid: 25 degrees of freedom, driven by tendons instead of gears, with skin that can actually feel. Running at gear ratios as low as 5:1, every joint doubles as a force sensor — so NEO can pick up single screws and coins, spin in a light bulb, pour tea, zip a jacket, and catch a slipping cup before it falls.
1x Tech has revealed its new robotic hand – a hand, which the company claims can now perform virtually any task a human can do with their hands – with the precision, adaptability, and gentleness required for real-world environments.
This is NEO’s new hand, from robotics company 1X — and it packs 25 degrees of freedom, moved by tendons instead of bulky gears.
Those tendons run at gear ratios as low as 5-to-1, so every joint doubles as a sensor. Push on a finger, and it reports exactly how hard.
Add high-resolution skin that feels pressure, contact and slip — and NEO can catch a cup starting to slide before it ever falls.
It’s strong, too: up to 45 newtons at the fingertips, a wrist proven past 2 million cycles, and precision down to two-tenths of a millimetre.
That lets it pick up single screws and coins, spin in a light bulb, pour tea, zip a jacket — even sign language.
It’s IP68 waterproof and foodsafe, so it can wash its own hands. And 1X says it can already build ten thousand of these this year.
