New this morning, Sacramento place in the biotech’s job space is set to grow again, and that is because *** company with manufacturing and research in this area just got approval for *** new cell therapy treatment that could increase survival rates for certain transplant patients. K33’s Mike Dell live at Metro Air Parkway to explain why this area has become *** pipeline for biotech jobs. Yes, and Deirdre, you know, as far as the drug’s concerned, uh, the company says this really can add to the arsenal of oncologists dealing with certain types of blood cancer patients, but as far as jobs, well, the name on the door is Orca Bio. It’s *** Bay Area startup. Started about 10 years ago and started with roughly *** dozen people, but today this company employs around 250 people in Sacramento alone, and that number is about to grow. The approval of the new cell therapy known as Tregy means the company now must expand its. Commercial manufacturing workforce. The company’s CEO told me that in the past year alone, the company has tripled its Sacramento workforce, and much of that talent homegrown, coming in collaboration with places like UC Davis and including Sac State and Solano College. We’re showing them that they don’t have to leave Sacramento to pursue that career, they don’t have to go to the Bay Area, they don’t have to go to Boston or San Diego. We’re creating uh jobs and opportunities and really career development, uh, right, right here in Sacramento. The company CEO told me the plan is for Orcabio to continue to grow, and in order for that to happen, they said they’ll need *** lot more people to help continue to build and manufacture these drugs. The company says, uh, Sacramento, an example of *** marketplace that is proving it can recruit talent right here for biotech. Careers live in Sacramento at Metro Air Parkway. Mike, CaseyR raises. Well, Orca Bao does currently have two locations in the Sacramento area, the 100,000 square foot production facility at Metro Air Parkway, and then the second location is where the researchers do their thing.
