Players Lose Thousands Of MMR In Recent Dota 2 Update As Valve Adjusts Immortal Bracket

Valve has just rolled out the Summer Scrub update, where they fixed a bunch of bugs. However, the most important part of the update is arguably the changes to the MMR system in the Immortal bracket. They pretty much did a massive deflation of MMR, so let’s see what that means.

Valve Deflates Every Immortal Player’s MMR

It’s no secret that the Dota 2 MMR system has gotten pretty inflated in recent times – I mean players are reaching record-breaking MMR records twice a year. We even had PARIVISION’s Satanic become the first player to hit 18,000 MMR last week, and that wasn’t breaking news either – it was really just “oh, that’s cool.”

Well, Valve took matters into their own hands, as they have adjusted the MMRs of all Immortal-ranked players, mentioning that all players are now between 1 and 9,500 MMR, so nobody is over the five-digit mark anymore (for now, at least).

The changelogs are:

  • Immortal Rank players have had their MMR adjusted. All players are now between 1 and 9500 MMR.
  • The cutoff for Immortal Draft is still 8500.
  • Relative player placement and leaderboard positions are unchanged.

It’s worth noting that these changes only affect Immortal players, so if you’re Divine and below, you have nothing to worry about – nobody stole your MMR.

Valve clarified that leaderboard positions are unchanged, so I believe every single Immortal player roughly had the same percentage of MMR reduced – it’s just a massive deflation. Everyone’s relative player placement remains unchanged.

I’m supposed to be one of the players affected by this change, but unfortunately, I literally just clicked “Recalibrate” a couple days ago, so I didn’t get to see how much my personal MMR and leaderboard rank has changed.

However, former Gaimin Gladiators mid-laner Quinn has apparently gone from 16,000 MMR to 9,000. Arteezy also posted his new MMR on X being 8,500. Several users on Reddit were also sharing their experiences, and they were generally claiming to have lost around 20% of their MMR.

Since Satanic was the highest-ranked player in the world at around 18,000 MMR, we can assume he’s sitting at around 9,500 now, which is the maximum number Valve mentioned in their announcement.

This is definitely an interesting change, as I’ve personally lost my motivation to grind because of how inflated the ranks are. I mean, I was sitting at 8,000 MMR a week ago, putting me at the top 1% of players, and Satanic literally has 10,000 more MMR than me.

Immortal Draft Still Exists

Many top players complain about the Immortal Draft system being the real problem in high-tier pubs, as win-trading has been running rampant. However, Valve has not done anything about it with this update, which could leave many professional players a little cranky.

Additional Matchmaking Changes

Other than the big MMR deflation, Valve also added several changes to Ranked Matchmaking in general:

  • Random Draft and Ranked Classic have been removed from the available Ranked modes.
  • Added new option ‘Automatically select all roles when no Role Queue Tokens available’ to the Ranked Play Tab; this option is defaulted false.
  • When players unlock Ranked for the first time, they also get 5 role queue tokens.

The biggest change here is the removal of Ranked Classic, which is where you queue into matches without selecting any roles. You’re thrown into a free-for-all where teammates will fight over their preferred roles. Random Draft is also gone, but nobody really plays that, so I’m sure we don’t really care.
