Sony opens Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble pre-registrations on iOS and Android

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially moved its mobile multiplayer project, Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, out of closed regional testing. Developed by mobile studio Oh BiBi in collaboration with Insomniac Games and PlayStation Studios, the free-to-play arena shooter has opened global pre-registrations on both iOS and Android.
Previously restricted to soft-launch markets such as Canada, France, the Nordics, and parts of Asia, this global storefront expansion confirms that the development cycle is entering its final stages. The strategy signals Sony’s broader push to leverage premium console intellectual property within the mobile gaming space. While Sony has not officially confirmed a launch date… October 2026 looks to be the expected release window.
Gameplay mechanics and authenticity
Shifting completely away from the traditional single-player platforming of the classic entries, Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble delivers a fast-paced, third-person twin-stick hero shooter. The in-universe narrative cleverly frames the online multiplayer chaos as a holographic combat simulation built by Captain Qwark to discover the next generation of Galactic Rangers.
As per the developer, the game retains the signature movement mechanics that defined the console titles, integrating smooth rail-grinding, wall-running, and double-jumping directly into dynamic arena navigation.
The game launches with 12 playable characters, mixing classic fan favorites with new faces designed in partnership with Insomniac: including Widget, a Lombax investigative journalist, and Celeste, a daredevil from Rivet’s dimension.
Sony has confirmed six game modes will be available at launch, spanning PvP, co-op PvE, battle-royale-style, and sports-inspired formats. Among the modes detailed so far:
- Bolt Rush: A six-player PvPvE mode where players collect bolts while fending off mobs, bosses, and rival players.
- Total Rumble: An eight-player free-for-all elimination match: the last Ranger standing, or the one with the most kills, wins.
- Blast Ball: A 3v3 mode in the spirit of Rocket League, where players blast a hypercharged ball into the opposing goal using their weapons.
The remaining modes in the lineup have not been revealed as of yet.
Mobile monetization
The live-service progression loop relies on a layered mobile economy. Advancing your roster requires tracking multiple resources, including standard Qredits for basic upgrades, character-specific weapon blueprints to unlock the 20-plus tool arsenal (featuring classic Buzz Blades and the Glove of Doom), and Raritanium as a premium currency.
Sony is leveraging tiered pre-registration milestone rewards to maximize day-one download volume, offering scaling resource packages and an exclusive Clank Suit cosmetic skin for Widget. While Sony has not finalized a hard worldwide launch date, current signage suggests global rollout could arrive as early as this October, though the date remains unconfirmed.
