Soulslike devs accidentally make a powerful case for discs: PS5-exclusive physical edition sells out as Sony moves to end physical editions

Sony plans to end physical discs by 2028, assuming no one wants to hold anything in their hands anymore now that we have the Fortnite item shop to provide us with Skibidi Toilet backpack in exchange for real money. But if that were even a little bit true, then Mortal Shell 2 developer Cold Symmetry wouldn’t have to be so despondent. Its PS5-exclusive Revered Edition with a physical disc is running out of stock, which is great, but Cold Symmetry doesn’t yet have confirmed plans to replace it.

“Demand for the PS5 physical Revered Edition of Mortal Shell 2 has exceeded expectations,” Cold Symmetry writes in a July 16 Twitter post, ahead of the grim Soulslike sequel’s August 20 launch. “Unfortunately supply across a number of retailers has now been fully reserved, meaning that in a growing number of markets fans are unable to pre-purchase a copy of the game. We apologise for the lack of availability.”

Mortal Shell 2 follows the first game from 2020 in being a frigid stone slab of an action-RPG, all gray and mist blue as you possess fallen warriors’ empty Shells and use their combat powers against heretics. Its fancy $70 Revered Edition comes in a big box with a physical game, steelbook, artbook, and in-game exclusives. While most major retailers seem to still be accepting pre-orders for the Edition, Cold Symmetry suggests there’s no guarantee your order will be fulfilled if you place one.

“There is a very low chance of additional physical copies becoming available before the game’s release,” the developer continues on Twitter. “We are working with our distribution partner to review ongoing demand and we’ll update as soon as we hear their decision on next steps.”
