Ubisoft Is Cooking More Far Cry Games At Vantage Studios

A new report claims that a new Far Cry title is in the works at the Ubisoft subsidiary studio Vantage Studios, as the extraction shooter rumours die.

News surrounding Far Cry’s next title has been a rollercoaster ride, with the extraction shooter spinoff title in development hell. But now, a new report from Insider Gaming indicated that the extraction shooter idea, codenamed Maverick, is cancelled—opting for an open-world FPS, codenamed Kodiak. While the extraction shooter concept may not have been a mainline game, Kodiak will most likely be a Far Cry mainline title coming out of Ubisoft’s Vantage Studios at some point in the future. Unfortunately for gamers, sources indicate that development will be years off.

Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming noted that Kodiak would be an open-world FPS where “player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage.” Far Cry has been known for its open-world FPS elements, and creating captivating stories and characters. Ultimately, this new game does not sound too far off from the previous games. But Henderson wrote that the game was described as “really ambitious”, so it might be that player choices will be even more integral to end-of-game outcomes.

As Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and Assassin’s Creed Shadows have been unsteadily carrying Ubisoft’s back of late, Far Cry may help with that load at the AAA developer and publisher. This is not to discount the work being done on Rainbow Six Siege either, which has consistently held up live service tactical shooter fan bases for years. With Kodiak passing the conceptualization stage, this means that codename Blackbird will be the next mainline game—holding the space as Far Cry 7.

Blackbird was in a similar situation as the extraction shooter Maverick, with its own challenges during development, and has been constantly delayed internally due to unknown issues. However, recent updates noted that the game is on track again, even adding multiplayer, where more than one player can experience the world together. Apparently, an internal interview at Vantage Studios with Charlie Guillemot described Blackbird as “honestly impressive” and as “Act One”, suggesting that several mainline Far Cry games with similar concepts are planned if Blackbird receives a positive reception.

For those who have not been keeping up with the leaks, Maverick, or what leakers thought Far Cry 7 was going to be, supposedly would take place in Alaska. The game would allegedly feature an extraction mode and have pitted players against wildlife in a race for survival. However, these Far Cry 7 rumours have since been debunked. For what it is worth for gamers who enjoy extraction shooters, Kodiak or Blackbird could implement an extraction feature or mode to its game. Maybe the success of the Far Cry TV series will also help push game development, as new audiences will be turned towards the games.
