WhatsApp Rolls Out Home Screen Voice Message Widget for Android

WhatsApp has started rolling out a new home screen widget for Android that allows users to record and send voice messages without opening a specific chat. The feature is currently available to some beta testers using WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.30.2, making voice messaging faster and more convenient.

According to WABetaInfo, the new widget gives users a shortcut to record voice notes directly from the Android home screen. Instead of opening a conversation first, users can tap the widget to launch a dedicated recording interface. The screen includes controls to pause, resume, discard, or confirm a recording before sending it.

Once a voice message is ready, WhatsApp opens a contact selection screen where users can choose one or multiple recipients. This means the same voice note can be sent to several contacts at the same time without needing to forward it manually.

The widget has a compact 3×1 default size, allowing it to fit neatly on the home screen without taking up much space. Users can place it wherever they prefer and resize it if needed. However, WhatsApp does not add the widget automatically. Those interested in using it must manually add it through the Android widget menu by long-pressing the home screen and selecting the WhatsApp voice message widget.

This feature is expected to be especially useful for people who frequently communicate through voice notes. Previously, users had to record a voice message in one chat, send it, and then forward it to other contacts. The new widget removes these extra steps by allowing users to record once and send the message directly to multiple people.

To help users discover the feature, WhatsApp is also introducing an in-chat notice. After recording a voice message, some users may see a notification informing them that a home screen widget is available. Since many Android users rarely browse the widget menu, this reminder aims to increase awareness of the new shortcut.
