Winooski man, previously accused of attempted murder, charged in $18,000 fraud scheme
Vermont State Police arrested Tyrin Smith for allegedly transferring $18,000 to a bank account under a fake name.
WINOOSKI, Vt. —
A 22-year-old from Winooski is facing several charges, including fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny, for allegedly stealing $18,000 from two people in Moretown.
On Tuesday, Vermont State Police said Tyrin Smith used electronic means to deceive the victims and gain access to their bank accounts, then transferred the money to a bank account he opened under a false identity.
Police executed a search warrant at Smith’s home on Wednesday evening and located incriminating evidence that connected him to the fraud, including a fake ID card which matched the one used to open the bank account.
They also seized a firearm that had been stolen from the University of Vermont Police Department in March 2025, according to a supplemental police affidavit.
Smith was prohibited from possessing any firearm due to a prior burglary conviction.
Back in 2023, Tyrin Smith and his brother Fortune Smith were accused of breaking into an apartment in downtown Burlington and shooting an unintended target in the chest. Tyrin Smith, who was 19 at the time, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, but took a plea deal in 2024 for the burglary charge.
Vermont State Police confirmed that the Tyrin Smith they arrested on Wednesday was the same person charged in the Burlington incident.
He was held at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility and later posted $8,000 for bail. He’s due back in court on Thursday to be arraigned on the charges.
