Better seed technology strengthens SA’s grain future

South African grain production operates in an increasingly complex environment where every season presents its own set of challenges.

According to Corteva Agriscience, weather variability, changing pest and disease pressures, rising input costs and increasing demands for sustainable and profitable production have made farming more complex than ever before.

“While favourable soil moisture levels and healthy dam reserves provide encouraging conditions for the coming summer grain planting season, the prediction of El Niño conditions may translate into greater variability in rainfall distribution, prolonged dry spells during critical crop growth stages and increased pressure on crop performance. Against this backdrop, Corteva Agriscience’s research and innovation play a critical role in supporting farmers,” Corteva stated.

Innovations for SA’s grain farmers

Research for South African farmers remains particularly important as agricultural conditions vary significantly across production regions, with differences in soil types, rainfall patterns, temperatures, pests and diseases.

Based on Corteva’s research, South Africa’s grain industry continues to demonstrate the ability of farmers to adapt and innovate. The country is poised to harvest an ample 17.25 million tonnes of maize, the largest harvest on record, highlighting the strength of local agricultural expertise and the importance of continued investment in productivity-enhancing technologies.

However, every season brings new variables, and a successful harvest in one year does not eliminate future production risks. The continued development of seed and agricultural solutions that support yield stability, adaptability and resource efficiency will remain critical to strengthening food production systems.
