Apex Legends dev built his mom a memorial inside the game after she died
An Apex Legends developer turned real grief into a permanent fixture inside the game, and most players will walk right past it.
Apex Legends build engineer Tyler Owens has spent five years working on the game behind the scenes, the kind of job that rarely gets a face attached to it. When his mom died, he gave her a permanent address inside the world he helped build, tucked somewhere players had no real reason to look.
A letter from his mom, taped to the fridge
The tribute sits inside E-District, the cyberpunk-styled map Apex Legends added last year, specifically within the Heights point of interest. Players need to find the tallest building in that cluster, then head for the top floor rather than the roof, where an ordinary-looking apartment holds the whole thing.
Taped to the fridge inside is a handwritten note that reads in full: “Can’t wait to go on our next adventure together. Let’s meet at the beach where the dragonflies are. Love you always, Mom. P.S. I am OK with this.” The postscript nods to what hangs beside it, a painting of Owens’ dog, copied from an old photo of the dog soaked and grinning after what looks like a swim.
Owens shared the discovery himself, in a multi-slide clip that walked through the apartment step by step instead of dropping a single screenshot, and captioned it simply “Surprise dog too!”. The version that surfaced shows him reaching it mid-match, a Mixtape round timer ticking down in the corner the entire climb, and nothing about the door marks it apart from any other unit players loot and leave behind in seconds.
Apex Legends has folded real loss into its maps before, most famously a 2019 dog shrine hidden in Kings Canyon, but a note this personal on a kitchen fridge is a first. Still, E-District keeps giving players reasons to look closer, whether that’s the map’s new Cyberpunk collab turning it into Night City or everything else arriving with Season 29.
