Gangwon Province will develop core technologies to build a liquid hydrogen acquisition base.

Gangwon Province announced on the 27th that it has secured 29 billion won in state funds by being selected as a “liquid hydrogen storage tank and drip system technology development project” organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Accordingly, design and research and development will begin in July this year.

14 companies and institutions, including GS Engineering & Construction, HD Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Korea Gas Corporation, and Advanced Technology Research Institute, will participate in this project in the form of a consortium. The project will be held at the hydrogen specialized industrial complex in Geundeok-myeon, Samcheok-si for four years from this year to 2029. The key is to localize and demonstrate the 200㎥ storage tank, which is the core facility of the liquid hydrogen acquisition base, and the 2-inch loading arm required for unloading liquid hydrogen. The storage tank can store about 14 tons of liquid hydrogen. The developed facilities and technologies will be applied to large-scale demonstration projects in the second stage in the future.

Starting with this technology development, Gangwon Province plans to gradually expand the project to build a liquid hydrogen acquisition base. Following the first stage of core technology research and development, the second stage of large-scale demonstration projects will be promoted and finally a commercial liquid hydrogen acquisition base will be established. The second phase of the project is a large-scale project in which Samcheok City was selected as a demonstration area in February. It plans to build and demonstrate a liquid hydrogen terminal equipped with a 4,000㎥ storage tank and a 5-ton hydrogen liquefaction plant by investing KRW 266.8 billion in state funds.

Sohn Chang-hwan, head of Gangwon-do’s global headquarters, said, “This first phase of technology development goes beyond selecting a research project and is the first step toward building a liquid hydrogen acquisition base in Korea. We will foster Samcheok as a world-class hydrogen specialized city through preemptive and active response and support.”
