Hero dog dies protecting 2-year-old boy and dad from wolf attack

A heroic dog sacrificed her life to protect a two-year-old boy and his father after a wolf entered the family’s garden in Italy.

The seven-year-old mixed breed, named Destiny, was playing with the toddler outside his home in Orbicciano, Tuscany, when the animal appeared on July 18.

The boy’s father, Tommaso, was preparing a barbecue nearby while his wife, Paula, was inside the house. According to the family, the wolf approached the child before Destiny placed herself between them.

Destiny began barking and confronted the predator, giving Tommaso enough time to get himself and his son to safety.

“She saved me and my son,” he said. “She was always a scaredy-cat who barked at strangers, but in that moment she was fearless.”

Tommaso estimated that the wolf weighed between 132 and 154 lbs, while Destiny weighed around 44 lbs. The wolf overpowered the dog, biting her throat and carrying her toward the nearby woods.

Paula recalled hearing Destiny yelping before rushing outside and seeing her in the wolf’s jaws.

“It carried her off like she was a rabbit,” she said.

The family chased after the animal and found Destiny’s body near a stream. However, darkness and the wolf’s continued presence forced them to retreat. When they returned the following morning, most of her remains were gone, and just her head, tail and paw remained.

Paula reportedly suffered cuts and bruises during the chase and was taken to hospital for checks. Her injuries were not considered serious, while the couple’s son escaped unharmed.

Destiny had been part of the family since she was a puppy after being rescued from a sack in which she had been abandoned.

The incident follows several other remarkable animal rescues. In 2025, a dog stopped a lit stick of dynamite from exploding outside her family’s home.

A nine-week-old kitten also made headlines after it sacrificed itself to save its sleeping owner from a house fire.
