Netflix top 10 movies — here’s the only 3 I’m considering watching this weekend (August 1-2)
Another weekend is here, and I hope your Saturday is off to a less soggy start than mine. I’m writing this from a drizzly coffee shop with some serious Café Leblanc vibes (I can practically hear the music now). If you’re hiding out from this heat inside and can’t narrow down what to watch, I’ve got you.
As usual, this weekend I’m cutting through the crap and letting you know what movies in the Netflix Top 10 are actually worth watching. Because lord knows not everything that makes the ranking is a winner. I didn’t expect Kevin Hart’s middling “72 Hours” to keep the top spot for two weeks in a row, but I guess we’ll take any laughs we can get these days.
I only recommend Netflix Top 10 movies that actually live up to the hype. This weekend’s picks include an uplifting drama based on a true story, one of the best “Spider-Man” movies to date, and “The Odyssey’s” Lupita Nyong’o in a horror movie that’s both haunting and charming.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’
While I’m still partial myself to the Sam Raimi “Spider-Man” movies, even I’ll admit that Tom Holland is a phenomenal “Spider-Man.” Or at least worlds better than Andrew Garfield. After winning our hearts alongside RDJ in “Civil War,” Holland shines in his first standalone MCU venture that mercifully skips the tragic backstory we’ve heard a million times in favor of a fun John Hughes-style high school adventure.
After his brief stint with the Avengers, teenager Peter Parker (Holland) returns to his everyday life in Queens, barely holding it together under the load of high school and all this new hero stuff. When a mysterious criminal named Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) starts selling advanced weapons created from alien technology, Peter dives into the case despite his mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) making it clear it’s hopelessly out of his league.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’
“A Quiet Place: Day One” is the movie that reignited my love for the series after “A Quiet Place 2” felt uninspired. And to tie it back to “The Odyssey” because that’s all anyone wants to talk about these days, it stars the very Helen of Troy herself, Lupita Nyong’o, on her own odyssey to grab a slice from her favorite pizza place before the world ends, and she’ll do damn near anything to get it.
She plays Samira, a cancer patient at a hospice center just outside Manhattan who wants nothing more than to be left alone to die in peace. Undeterred, nurse Reuben (Alex Wolff) convinces her (along with her emotional support cat Frodo) to come on a field trip to the city. Naturally, this is when all hell breaks loose and a blind alien species with a heightened sense of hearing begins tearing through the city.

‘Ordinary Angels’ (2023)
This fan-favorite Alan Ritchson movie has a near-perfect 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s one I love put on in the background around the holidays or to brighten a drizzly day. Directed by Jon Gunn, “Ordinary Angels” is based on the true story of a Kentucky community that rallied together to help save the life of a young girl.
Hilary Swank stars as Sharon Stevens, a hairdresser who can’t catch a break on a collision course with widowed father Ed Schmitt (Ritchson), who’s struggling to care for his two young daughters after losing his wife. When one of the girls needs a life-saving liver transplant, Sharon leads the community in providing support for the family through their darkest days, even with one of the worst snowstorms in Kentucky’s history on the horizon.
