PTA Cracks Down on Illegal SIMs Trade, 329 Activated SIMs Seized in Sahiwal

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), has intensified its campaign against the illegal issuance and sale of activated SIM cards, leading to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of hundreds of unauthorized SIMs. According to a PTA press release, the operation was carried out by the PTA Zonal Office Lahore following a complaint regarding the illegal trade of activated SIMs. During the raid in Sahiwal, NCCIA arrested a female suspect allegedly involved in the bulk sale of illegally activated SIM cards.

Authorities recovered a total of 329 illegally activated SIMs, including 176 Jazz, 83 Ufone, 66 Zong, and 4 Telenor SIMs. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was engaged in large-scale SIM trading, with the activated SIMs reportedly being distributed to multiple cities across Pakistan.

An FIR has been registered, and further investigations are underway to identify other individuals involved in the illegal network.

The PTA reiterated its commitment to eliminating the unlawful issuance of SIM cards and preventing the misuse of the Multi-Finger Biometric Verification System (MBVS), a key mechanism designed to ensure secure SIM registration and curb fraudulent activities.

The telecom regulator also urged citizens to regularly verify the number of SIMs registered against their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). Individuals who discover any unauthorized SIMs are encouraged to report them through PTA’s Toll-Free Helpline 0800-55055 or via the authority’s online complaint portal.

The latest operation reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies and the PTA to strengthen cybersecurity, combat identity fraud, and safeguard Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure.
