Stardew Valley “3DVR” mod looks like a whole different game, is “fully playable” and compatible with all of your existing mods
Stardew Valley’s wonderfully active modding scene has brought PC players many, many unofficial delights over the years, like the addition of a bear mount or, bless it, a mod that lets you see where all of your neighbors are on the map at any given moment. The latest marvel coming courtesy of a dedicated Stardew modder looks like a whole new game, one with a 3D world, a first-person perspective, motion controls, and VR compatibility.
“Play Stardew Valley in Full 3D or VR with Motion Controls,” says mod author GingasVR. “I’m Serious. Lightweight and Compatible with Everything.”
It’s a tempting proposition to be fully absorbed in a 3D transformation of Stardew Valley’s impossibly cozy world, but GingasVR cautions that the mod is still a work-in-progress. Despite “some visual weirdness,” which you can see in the clip below, the mod is “fully playable” and “won’t mess up your save.” According to GingasVR, you can install and uninstall it seamlessly and switch between 3D, 2D, and VR modes with hotkeys.

Even GingasVR admits this mod looks a little janky here and there, saying “there’s only so much you can do with C# scripting to create voxels out of sprites that are meant for 2D,” but if it’s really as smooth in motion as it looks, it’s still mighty impressive. I don’t have near enough qualifications to explain how it all works, but fundamentally, it uses procedural generation to create 3D voxels from the game’s existing 2D assets. That’s how GingasVR was able to make the mod in a matter of months rather than years.
I’d be interested to play it out of pure curiosity, and if you’re so inclined, there’s a video tutorial from GingasVR on how to get it all set up. It doesn’t sound particularly complicated, but if you aren’t used to installing mods for games, you should probably watch the guide.
