Wanderers of the sky and sea

Gianni Tumino, taken from Aci Trezza, Sicily, Italy

Since antiquity, the land of the Cyclops in Homer’s Odyssey has been linked to the real-world location of Sicily, near Mount Etna. Local legend has it that the small Cyclopean Isles, located just offshore, are the stones thrown by the Cyclops at Odysseus’ ship as he escaped from Polyphemus. In this image, taken at dawn on July 11, 2026, two other wanderers — Mars and Uranus — appear over the isles, joining a waning crescent Moon, the Pleiades and Hyades clusters, and the bright star Aldebaran. The photographer shot the scene on a Canon mirrorless camera with a 35mm lens at f/3.5, exposing for 1.3 seconds at ISO 6,400. Click here for an annotated version of this image.
