WhatsApp Web Gets Voice and Video Calling Support in Major Browser Upgrade

WhatsApp has expanded the capabilities of its web platform by introducing voice and video calling directly through web browsers, eliminating the need for users to install the desktop application.

The new functionality allows users to place and receive both individual and group voice or video calls from WhatsApp Web, marking one of the platform’s most significant feature additions in recent years. Meta says all calls remain protected with end-to-end encryption, carry no time restrictions, and are available free of charge.

The update is expected to benefit users who rely on shared or work computers where installing software is either restricted or impractical, enabling them to access WhatsApp’s calling features entirely through a browser.

Alongside browser-based calling, WhatsApp has introduced a dedicated Calls section on the web interface. The new tab provides quick access to recent call history and favorite contacts while also supporting features such as screen sharing and in-call reactions.

Another notable addition is Call Transfer, allowing users to seamlessly move an ongoing group call between devices without disconnecting participants. For example, a conversation started on a smartphone can be transferred to WhatsApp Web or the desktop application and vice versa.

The platform has also enhanced its call management tools by introducing an optional “Require approval to join” setting for call links. When enabled, participants are placed in a virtual waiting room until the host grants access, providing organizers with greater control over group calls.

To improve call quality, WhatsApp is rolling out noise suppression, which minimizes background sounds during conversations. The feature can be enabled or disabled through the in-call settings.

Additionally, the messaging platform is introducing QuickHD, a technology designed to deliver high-definition video quality almost immediately after a video call begins, reducing the delay typically experienced before image quality stabilizes.

Meta said the new calling capabilities and related enhancements are being released in phases. As a result, some users may receive the features later than others, with broader availability expected in the coming weeks.
